
acrylate coating on this fiber exhibits absorption especially in the 8- to 10-mm
region. The core/clad TeX fiber shows some strong extrinsic absorption bands.
From Fig. 13.6, there is strong absorption due to OH
(3 mm), Se-H (4.6 mm),
and H

O (6.3 mm). The data also show that the loss at 10.6 mm is rather large,
but it is significantly better at 9.3 mm where a CO
2
laser can operate. Using a
9.3 mmCO
2
laser, they were able to transmit 2.6 W of laser power through a
600-mm diameter, 1-m long fiber.
