Silica fiber photosensitivity finds applications in many fields such as optical
signal processing, communications, and sensors. Many types of silica FBGs
like chirped gratings, apodized gratings, or long-period gratings have been
extensively studied over the past 2 decades. The technology is now completely
mature and relatively inexpensive.
The POF was developed at about the same time as the silica fiber by the U.S.
company Dupont in 1968. During the following years, POF was neglected in
