It has to flow, it has to be safe for the actor, it should look real, and it shouldn’t stain, but there is no one perfect stage blood recipe. Both Technical Brief and Theatre Crafts have previously addressed this common and complex problem, but neither has published the two recipes printed here.
In its edible form, this first recipe realistically simulates the results of mouth injuries, and its sweetness is an incentive for the actor to spit it out.
1. Mix together ⅓ to ½ bottle corn syrup and 2½ tbsp. peanut butter, the more processed, the better.
2. Add 1 tsp. corn starch, a little less for a thinner mix.
3. Mix well and add 1 tbsp. red food color.
