A fox was running, jumping, and playing in a large field, enjoying one of the last days of autumn. As he sprang up and over a fence, he plunged headfirst into a hole that had been dug by a farmer who had been building a well. The farmer had found little water but left the large and gaping hole. In a panic the fox jumped and jumped, attempting to escape from his new prison, but always fell just short of the top. He was unable to spring himself free and was becoming incredibly fatigued and wet. Another fox walked by and stuck his face over the edge of the hole and asked the first fox what he was doing.
