In some instances—such as lobby phones and other public access areas—the team needed
to provide IP phone service but was restricted to voice-only to prevent unauthorized access
to the desktop network. The IP phone is designed so that a computer can be connected to
it, allowing the computer to access the network as well. The voice-only restriction was
accomplished by allowing only the voice VLAN to be active on the CAT 6500 port to which
the IP phone was connected.
