Category 5/Category 3 Wiring, Cabling Requirements
At the time of the IP Telephony rollout, the Cisco San Jose campus cabling configuration
consisted of four Category 5 and two Category 3 cables per standard wall plate. Several new
buildings were going up on campus. To prepare those new buildings for the IP Telephony
deployment, the team decided to eliminate the Category 3 cables. Those old cables would
not be needed for the IP phones.
Because Internet telephony runs on existing IT data network infrastructure, the user’s PC
