8.7 VALID XML DOCUMENT

An XML document is supposed to be a Valid XML, if, in addition to being well formed, it also conforms to its semantics that it is supposed to convey. The rules, as per its semantics, are governed by a set of legal building blocks called the Document Type Definition, abbreviated as DTD. It is specific to the XML in the sense that any XML document which describes it is governed by the same DTD.

In other words, DTD specifies what the rules are, that govern the specific XML. All items that we see around us have a structure.
