Windows DS is installed as an update to Windows Server 2003 or added as a role in Windows Server 2008. The following procedures outline the basic installation steps for Windows DS. Refer to the appropriate guidance (listed in the "Additional Resources" section at the end of this chapter) for complete instructions and planning advice.
To completely install Windows DS on a Windows Server 2003 computer, you must first install RIS. After RIS is installed, you install the Windows DS update or Windows Server 2003 SP2 (which contains the update). The Windows AIK also includes the Windows DS update, which you can install on any server after extracting the file from the Windows AIK media.
