Most updates in your organization should be installed using WSUS or SMS. However, at times you may need to manually install, script, or remove updates. This section provides an overview of Windows Update files and describes how to work with updates.
Windows Vista uses a new file type for installing updates: MSU files. MSU files are Microsoft Update Standalone Packages. MSU files are not executable files, as updates for earlier versions of Windows are. However, they function quite similarly to executable files, because you can double-click them to install an update.
