Before You Start

The best way to learn is by doing. You can read and use Chapters 2 through 17 while you are sitting in front of a screen and keyboard attached to a system running GNU/Linux. Learn about GNU/Linux by running the examples in this book and by making up your own examples. Feel free to experiment with various utilities. The worst thing that you can do is erase one of the files that you have created , but because these are only practice files, you can easily create others.

The source code for GNU/Linux and many GNU/Linux applications is free; Red Hat Linux is available on CD-ROM from Red Hat and other sources (such as the ones in this book) and from the Internet.
