GLOSSARY
- AdWords.
Google's flagship product, these are words on web pages that are advertisements, and site owners are paid each time an ad is clicked on them.
- Blog.
An online journal where you can post content for others to read.
- Bot.
Shorthand for "robot," an automated program that collects information from web servers regarding the web sites it hosts. The Bot returns the information that's catalogued by the originating search engine.
- BPS.
Abbreviation for "bits per second," which is a measurement of how fast data are moved from one place to another. For example, a 56k modem can move 56,000 bits per second. Connection speeds are always referred to in terms of bits, not bytes.
- Browser.
A software program, such as Netscape or Explorer, that views web page content.
- Click-through.
The action of clicking on a link.
- Click-through rate (CTR).
The ratio of click-throughs to total emails sent.
- Crawler.
An automated software agent that's part of a search engine. See "spider-based search engines" for more information.
- DNS.
Abbreviation for Domain Name System, Domain Name Service, and Domain Name Server. This is an Internet service that translates domain names into numerical IP addresses.
Because domain names consist of letters, they're easy to remember. However, the Internet is based on IP addresses (see definition below) that consist of numbers. Therefore, every time you use a domain name, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name
