Mt. Gox was a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, and it faced the biggest hack in the history of cryptocurrencies. In 2011, the Mt. Gox server was attacked, and around 850,000 bitcoins (valued at $450 million at the time) were stolen after their hot wallet storage was compromised. Although the exchange was able to recover some of the bitcoins, the majority of the coins were lost forever. Eventually, in February 2014, the company filed for bankruptcy.
