Convolutional layers

By studying the organization of the visual cortex of higher life forms (including humans), researchers gained inspiration for the design of CNNs. Each neuron of the visual cortex responds to signals that are received from a limited region of the visual field – the neuron's receptive field. The receptive fields of various neurons overlap partially, which allows them to cover the entire visual field, as shown in the following diagram:
