Because this is the rst concrete demonstration of lighting technique in
this book, we will discuss it in great detail. e example shows how an expe-
rienced photographer thinks through any lighting arrangement. Beginners
will be surprised at the amount of thinking involved in even such simple
lighting, but they should not be dismayed by it.
Much of this thinking is identical from one picture to the next, and it
quickly becomes so habitual that it takes almost no time or eort. You
will see this as we progress, and we will omit some of the detail in future
chapters.
