Eight years ago, I was friended by a New York State senator on Facebook. I accepted, despite not knowing the politician personally, because I admired a public servant using social media to broaden his knowledge and reach. Also, I had nearly run for New York public office myself at one point, and I figured that since I already knew a number of other state senators from that experience, I might eventually run into him in New York City anyway.
