Decide How to Manage Advanced Projects
Does your organization have an “Advanced R&D” group? Maybe you have an “Exploratory” group or set of exploratory projects. In my experience, these teams do not release products. They investigate and release prototypes. If so, you have several decisions: how you want to manage that project portfolio, and when those projects transition to your regular portfolio.
You might not need an “Advanced R&D” group. You might need to rank “hackathon” days or weeks in your project portfolio. When you conduct hackathons to experiment with possible new products, you still want to understand when to have those hackathons and when to transition those hacks to real projects.
