Once the gradients have been computed, the cost function can be moved in the direction of its minimum. However, in practice, it is better to perform an update after the evaluation of a fixed number of training samples (batch). Indeed, the algorithms that are normally employed don't compute the global cost for the whole dataset, because this operation could be very computationally expensive.
