Selecting Chart Elements

To change the appearance of any chart element, such as the legend or the category axis, first select the element (or right-click it to access its shortcut menu directly). Sometimes, in a complex chart, the easiest way to do this is to select the item in the Chart Objects list, on the Chart toolbar. If you select the object by clicking directly on the chart, you can confirm that you've selected the item you want by glancing at the Chart Objects list or the Name box (to the left of the formula bar near the upper left corner of your screen).
