One of the most important new features in Excel 2003 is its capability to open, import, and export Extensible Markup Language (XML) data in any structure. The previous version of Excel supported XML only to the extent of being able to save and open spreadsheets in a particular schema, called XML Spreadsheet. Existing data in XML files that did not use this schema were still locked out. This is no longer the case.
