It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
26.1. Mechanisms for extensibility
The development of techniques for designing extensible systems formed one of the main thrusts of operating systems research during the 1980s and 1990s. Seltzer et al. (1997) identified a taxonomy of schemes around which we base our discussion. They consider five aspects of the system: the technology that is used to extend it, the trust and failure of extensions, the lifetime over which a particular extension remains in effect, the granularity with which aspects of the system may be extended and the approach that the system takes to conflict arbitration between incompatible extensions.
