From its outset Java was integrated with distributed programming by means of the web. Web programming was covered in detail in Chapter 28 and here we review the history and aspects that are relevant to this style of middleware.
In 1990 Sun Microsystems set up a team of six, led by Patrick Naughton, to think afresh about support for distributed software development over heterogeneous systems. The team recognized the importance of a 'fun', easy to use interface and a language that allowed new media and devices to be programmed, and defined a minimal object-oriented language called Oak.
