It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
The lifecycle of an Akka Actor
As we discussed, an Akka Actor is also an object or instance. Like any other object, an Akka Actor also has lifecycle methods. We will discuss them theoretically in this section and will provide some examples to understand them well in the coming sections.
Who manages the lifecycle of an Actor? The Actor's Supervisor, which may be either its parent Actor or the ActorSystem.
Akka Toolkit provides the following Actor lifecycle methods to manage it very well:
- ActorSystem.actorOf() or ActorContext.actorOf()
- Actor.receive()
- Actor.preStart()
- Actor.postStop()
- Actor.preRestart()
- Actor.postRestart()
- ActorContext.stop() or ActorSystem.stop()
- ActorSystem.terminate()
