The primary outcome was to assess the proportion of time during an

average working day that the manager spends using a coaching style

of management (coaching others) as opposed to leading, managing or

doing the work themselves.

The timing of the research was set by BEIS and covered a period of

significant economic and political turmoil which included the UK’s

Brexit planning and execution, a general election and the COVID-

19 pandemic. This was possibly the most challenging period to

conduct research that would be looking for evidence of changes in

productivity.
