Don’t play games
It’s so tempting sometimes . . . you think, ‘I’ll just sit tight and see how long it takes him to phone’, or ‘I’ll tell her I’m really upset about my mum’s operation, just to see if she agrees to come and meet my mum after all’.
Look, if you want to speak to him, just phone him. If you want her to meet your mum, just ask her. Game-playing is dangerous territory to get into, and it can so easily backfire. The only way to begin a relationship is as you mean to go on, and if you don’t want to be playing games for years, don’t start.
Remember that if it’s OK for you to play games, it’s OK for them too. Is that want you want? Games – however innocent and well-meaning you may convince yourself they are – are a form of manipulation. ...
