A friend of mine has a lovely 2-year-old little boy. She would dearly love a sibling for him, but so far it’s just not happened. At the moment it’s a big sadness in her life. And it’s not helped by all the people who keep asking her when she’s going to have another child. Or even – as happened to her recently – pointing out how easy she has it compared to other people because she has only one to look after.
These are conversations you might have with your brother or your best friend, in a spirit of genuine interest and concern, but it’s not something we should be saying to people who may not feel happy about opening up to us about their innermost feelings.
