Dana Tomlin coined the term “cartographic modeling” in his PhD dissertation in 1983, and he later used it in the title of his book Geographic Information Systems and Cartographic Modeling, which was published in 1990.
Cartographic modeling is the process wherein thematic layers of the same area are produced, processed, and analyzed. It should be noted that Tomlin used raster layers, however, the overlay method can be used in most general situations. Operations on map layers are able to then be combined with the usage of algorithms to be incorporated into simulations or optimization models.
