Sites are primarily designed based on Active Directory replication. There are other functions that sites perform, which need to be mentioned here.
As previously mentioned, clients and DCs are grouped together by sites to make the client-server process more efficient. For a client to function normally, it must have access to an Active Directory DC, domain name system (DNS) services, and GC services. Therefore, plan your sites so that these services are available to clients with the highest availability possible (or affordable).
