A critical exercise for any association CSE to guide his or her board and volunteer leadership through is environmental scanning. As noted in Chapter Nine, scanning is used for multiple purposes, but the most relevant point made is to “identify what is visible but not yet seen to avoid being blindsided, head off adverse outcomes, and take advantage of opportunities.” However, no existing model fits all associations.
