In 1972, Codd originally proposed eight operations of relational algebra, but several others
have also been developed subsequently. The fi ve fundamental operations of relational algebra
are selection, projection, Cartesian product, union and set difference. The fi rst two among these
are unary operations and the last three are binary operations. In addition, there are three derived
operations of relational algebra, namely, join, intersection and division, which can be represented
