
This chapter focuses on the basic concepts of data warehousing, data mining and online ana-
lytical processing (OLAP). A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, time-variant, integrated, non-
volatile repository of information for strategic decision-making. Data in warehouses may be
multi-dimensional. OLAP is the dynamic synthesis, analysis and consolidation of large volumes
of multi-dimensional data. Data mining is the process of extracting valid, previously unknown,
