This chapter introduces the evolution of distributed database technology and some key concepts
of parallel database systems. This chapter mainly focuses on the benefi ts of parallel databases and
different types of architecture for parallel database systems. Data partitioning techniques for parallel
database design are also discussed with examples.
The outline of this chapter is as follows. The evolution of distributed database system is rep-
resented in Section 2.1. In Section 2.2, an overview of parallel processing system is presented, and
