3.1 Introduction

Ionic liquids (ILs) are low-melting salts composed entirely of ions. Many ILs are liquid at room temperature (so-called room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs)). They have been extensively used as potential “green” alternatives to toxic, hazardous, flammable, and highly volatile organic solvents. Unlike traditional organic solvents, ILs have many favorable properties such as negligible vapor pressure, wide liquid temperature range, nonflammability, high thermal and excellent chemical stability, high ionic conductivity, large electrochemical window, and ability to dissolve a variety of solutes.
