Probability versus likelihood
You will notice that we use the term probability when referring to the hypothesis and likelihood when referring to the evidence. In daily life these terms are synonyms, but in statistics and probability theory there is a distinction between them (see also the ‘prosecutor’s fallacy’, below). The exact, technical explanation of this difference, however, falls beyond the scope of this book.
