This CAT indicates that Emotional Intelligence (EI) is not a radical new construct in leadership. Even though EI has (some) positive effects, these effects can also be explained by the overlap with other psychological constructs. In addition, the claims made by well-known consultancy firms such as Hay Group that ‘EI can make the difference between a highly effective and an average professional contributor’ is not supported by the outcome of this CAT. For this reason, I advise against investing in training courses that claim to develop our executives’ EI.
