A controller area network (CAN) is the communication backbone for many subsystems in the automotive industry. The advantages of CAN are its robust physical layer, a prioritized messaging scheme, and multi-master bus arbitration. Many MCUs include dedicated CAN peripherals, which helps to ease the implementation. CAN is most naturally suited for shorter messages, since the data field of extended frames may only contain up to 8 bytes.
