High-reliability systems will often include multiple cores or processors for their critical functionality. However, rather than using this extra processing power to run individual parallel operations, they are set up for some level of redundancy. There are different ways of achieving redundancy. One path to creating a redundant system is for the cores to run in lockstep with one another. The results of each processor are meticulously checked against one another to detect any discrepancies. If a problem is found, the core (or processor) is taken offline and reset, with a set of tests run to ensure it comes back up correctly—then, it is put back into service.
