Working with Other Programs

iPhoto doesn’t work in a vacuum. It’s perfectly happy to transport your photos to an email program for sending, a graphics program like Photoshop or GraphicConverter for editing, and so on. It’s a great team player—and thus a great source of hints like the following.

Emailing Photos

You can send selected photos to interested parties by email, provided that you use one of the Big Four programs: Mail, Entourage, Eudora, or America Online. (Set your → preferred program in iPhoto → Preferences → > General.)

And even if you use another mail program, like Mailsmith, PowerMail, or QuickMail Pro, you’re still in luck. The freeware iPhoto Mailer Patcher, which you can download from http://homepage.mac.com/jacksim/software/imp.html, solves that problem neatly. As promised, it patches iPhoto so that you can use virtually any email program under the sun. It then replaces the Email icon at the bottom of the screen with that of your chosen program and installs a new AppleScript to handle the mailing duties.

Tip

iPhoto Mailer Patcher includes a Restore function that returns iPhoto to its original, more limited condition. Be sure to use this feature before you upgrade to a new version of iPhoto.
