Printer Setup Utility

Printer Setup Utility (in your Applications → Utilities folder) is Apple’s printer management tool. In a nutshell, this little program is where you add and remove printers. The system will launch the selected printer as a separate “mini-application” each time you print something. These printer “mini-apps” let you micromanage your printers, queues (lists of waiting printouts), and individual print jobs, too.

Dragging Print Jobs Between Printers

If you have more than one printer and you send a print job to the wrong one, Printer Setup Utility may be able to help you reroute the wayward job. See Figure 11-20 for details.

Figure 11-20. Rerouting a printout to a more appropriate printer is as simple as dragging it from one printer window to another. Of course, you must do the drag before it prints out on the original printer. (The ability to mess with the time-space continuum isn’t expected until Mac OS XX.)

First, halt the printer to which you misrouted the job: In Printer Setup Utility’s Printer List, double-click the printer and click Stop Jobs.

Now you see a list of the waiting printouts, including the one you misrouted. To reroute it, double-click the correct printer’s name to open its window alongside the current printer’s window, and then drag the print job into the correct printer’s window, as shown in Figure 11-20.
