When managers don’t do these simple things because they
say they don’t have time, it hardly matters what Theory Y
behaviors they do adopt, because workers have already con-
cluded that all that corporate training money has been wasted.
When the manager tries on other Theory Y behaviors and
is ignored because the workers don’t believe the manager
really wants to change, those behaviors soon disappear. That
sends a clear message that Theory Y principles aren’t really
rooted in the manager’s mind or heart.
Workers want to see proof over time that their man-
ager really and truly wants to make things better. ...
