Advising does not have to be a solemn, formal process
(as in the old master and the naïve pupil). More likely, it will
be a brief exchange at the water cooler or in the hallway.
“Gene, have you ever considered...?” or maybe “Sally, while
you’re home on maternity leave, would you be interested in
doing some telecommuting?” In both instances, the manager
can say, “If that interests you, stop by my office this after-
noon and let’s talk.”
The manager has planted an idea. If it takes root, the
employee will show up in the afternoon. If not, then at least
the offer was made. On to someone and something else.
