Building Self-Respect and Self-Esteem
When managers understand that people in subordinate rela-
tionships want to please their bosses, it opens up an entire
world of opportunities to move them toward exceptional per-
formance. It’s not “manipulative” in the usual, negative sense
of the word. Instead, it’s simply putting a very human need or
desire to good purpose, for the benefit of the organization and
the individual.
Here’s what I mean: Let’s say Sally turns in a report.
Instead of just accepting it with a nod of acknowledgement,
the manager holds the report, really looking at it, and then
