012 Chance

Artists are usually interested in control and manipulation, but some have embraced uncertainty for a variety of reasons.

Useful accident. Some techniques, such as heavy impasto painting, continually create many small accidents that the artist can choose to keep or erase.

Generating subject matter. Some modern artists have used chance to select and structure subject matter. Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), for instance, based the appearance of parts of his Large Glass on the chance formations of a falling piece of string.

Access to the unconscious. The Surrealists espoused the idea that inviting chance actions put the artist in touch with the unconscious mind.
