028 Distribution

The way in which elements are distributed across a surface is an important consideration in composition.

• This is especially true when elements are small relative to the area of the canvas. They can be clustered or scattered or be concentrated or dispersed. The viewer’s eye tends to rush toward concentrations and move more slowly in sparse areas, which makes a wide range of dynamics possible in which the eye is pulled or pushed in various directions.

• Careful control of distribution can confer extra properties on elements in a picture. They can be made to appear “sticky”—to have the tendency to stick together—or they can be made to feel airy and free floating.
