057 Op Art

“Op art” is a contraction of the term “optical art” and applies to art that creates a perceptual illusion or visual disturbance on the surface of the canvas.

STRATEGIES

Linear. Closely packed lines are arranged in parallel, waves, or zigzags.

Perspectival. Lines or shapes are arranged so that they appear to become three dimensional.

Chromatic. Shapes or lines appear to shimmer or fluctuate when saturated color of similar tonality is juxtaposed.

Pattern sequencing. A motif is progressively altered as it is arranged in a pattern to create an illusion of movement.

Moiré. Three-dimensional grid formations are placed over one another, creating an illusory pattern that shifts as the viewer moves in front of the work.
