“Op art” is a contraction of the term “optical art” and applies to art that creates a perceptual illusion or visual disturbance on the surface of the canvas.
• Linear. Closely packed lines are arranged in parallel, waves, or zigzags.
• Perspectival. Lines or shapes are arranged so that they appear to become three dimensional.
• Chromatic. Shapes or lines appear to shimmer or fluctuate when saturated color of similar tonality is juxtaposed.
• Pattern sequencing. A motif is progressively altered as it is arranged in a pattern to create an illusion of movement.
• Moiré. Three-dimensional grid formations are placed over one another, creating an illusory pattern that shifts as the viewer moves in front of the work.
