An image can be considered as a group of distinct elements arranged to further the intentions of the artist.
Elements are aligned with an underlying geometric pattern. Some examples include:
• The Golden Mean: A ratio of 1:1.618. Division of a work by this ratio conveys a sense of harmony.
• The Rule of Thirds: Dividing the canvas into three equal lengths both horizontally and vertically.
• Spiral: This technique allows for a sense of upward or downward movement.
Compositional elements can possess dynamic qualities. These include weight, a sense of direction, and dominant identity, the idea that certain elements, such as human figures, command more attention than others.
