089 Surrealism

Surrealism, a European art movement that developed in the years after World War I, asserted that the unconscious, nonrational mind was the appropriate guiding force in art. The movement’s leader, André Breton (1896–1966), was inspired in part by Sigmund Freud who regarded the dream as a means of access to the subconscious.

STRATEGIES

Automatic drawing. The artist puts himself into a passive trance and allows his hand to move without control on the paper.

Frottage. A sheet of paper is placed over a textured surface and a rubbing made. The artist allows the resultant formation to suggest new imagery.

Decalcomania. Paint is built up on paper and then pressed onto canvas. The paper is removed, leaving often surprising formations. ...
