The main component of any WLAN is a radio card, which 802.11 standards refer to as a station (STA). A STA can be any 802.11-capable device, including a laptop, smartphone, tablet, or plug-in card. If the device is an end point, it is referred to as a client station. An access point, which is also a STA, serves as the central hub that communicates with all the client stations within range. Typically, an access point is wired directly to a switch, which acts as the gateway through which client stations access the Ethernet network. However, an access point may also act as a wireless bridge, connecting over the air to another access point, which then connects to the switch.
