The purpose of a site survey, using an over-simplified definition, is to determine the optimal locations to mount the access points. More complete site surveys will also include measuring RF interference, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the impact of other wireless networks in the space. Site surveys can be predictive, passive, or active. Coverage analysis is what most people think of when they first consider performing an RF site survey, although a comprehensive site survey that includes capacity planning and spectrum analysis is critical to a well-operating Wi-Fi network.
