Wireless Antennas
Central to the performance of any wireless device is the antenna. Most access points, regardless of whether they were made for indoor or outdoor use, are manufactured with an internal antenna. External antennas are an option which can be used on access points that ship with an external antenna connector (many don’t). Regardless of whether the antenna is integrated or external, the antenna types function the same.
Antenna specifications include horizontal and vertical beamwidth, and gain. These patterns indicate the direction of signal radiation. Gain is an indicator of the effectiveness of the antenna to focus signal energy in one direction and is specified as decibels (dB), or decibels relative to an isotropic radiator (dBi). ...
