Fingerprinting Users
Smartphones have become a useful device for law enforcement. Here, the goal is not to fingerprint the device, but to use the device to fingerprint a person. This was done by providing police officers with a mobile system—a smartphone and a direct broadband connection—for scanning and processing fingerprints on the street. This allows police officers to be more productive by fingerprinting suspects in the field.
In 2014, the New York Police Department invested $160 million in such a system. Using the fingerprint sensor on the smartphone, officers were able to scan and fingerprint suspects at the scene.
